Over the past 11 weeks as a student in Flatiron’s Software Engineering Bootcamp, I have learned to create full stack web applications from scratch using Ruby and JavaScript. We have also spent time learning some very helpful frameworks that provide additional functionality and depth to our applications. Ruby on Rails allows us to implement model-view-controller methods and structures to easily maintain databases on the server-side/backend in accordance with standard web practices while React and Redux for JavaScript provide us with tools to create dynamic user interfaces on the client-side front end.

The first iteration of React JS was created by…

Sounds like somebody’s got a case of the COVID.

Last Sunday I woke up with a sore throat and dull headache. Over the next few days, the headache got worse and spread to my neck and chest. By Thursday, I began feeling tingling and popping in my sinuses which ultimately led to the complete loss of my senses of smell and taste. Later that same day, testing had confirmed I was suffering from this year’s trendy new virus, COVID-19. I am one of the 21,000 in Cook County, 489,000 in Illinois, 10 million in the United States, and 50.1 million in the world. Thankfully, I am one of the…

So does this guy.

What comes to mind when you see the word ‘cookie’? Chocolate chip? Oatmeal raisin? Snickerdoodle? HTTP or a small chunk of data used by web applications to identify your specific session while using the aforementioned web app? While I wholeheartedly prefer the first, after 5 weeks in Flatiron School’s Software Engineering Bootcamp, I am now inclined to give more thought to the latter answer.

The concept first appeared in computer science as “magic cookies” around 1979 where a transaction ID or some other kind of token was passed from one program to another. The data was not typically until the…

In Tommy Boy, the best film in the history of cinema, the late, great Chris Farley explains his prolonged college career with a simple, “Ya know, a lot of people go to college for seven years.” As a student in Flatiron School’s full-time software engineering bootcamp, I have essentially chosen the opposite. Over the course of 15 weeks, the program will introduce, develop, and drill the necessary knowledge and skills to become a full-stack web developer.

The first two weeks of bootcamp have been intense. This comes as no surprise given the use of the word “bootcamp”, but I had…
